Love variety and adventure? Become an Oxfam steward, you’ll play a rewarding role in making sure every festival and event runs smoothly, while helping raise money for Oxfam. For every festival or event you work at you raise almost enough money for Oxfam to provide clean water to 25 people for 1 year.
We usually ask you to do three shifts per festival and each shift is typically eight and a quarter hours long. You’re likely to do one day shift, one evening shift, and one night shift across the course of the event.
Stewarding is our largest operation, so if you have a favourite festival we are likely to have the most spaces in this role.
There are many different aspects to being an Oxfam steward. Stewards are the eyes and ears of a festival, and play an important part in ensuring the public are staying safe and enjoying themselves.
What will you be doing?
Our role is different at every festival – here are some examples of what you might be expected to do as an Oxfam steward:
Ticketing / Gates
You could be checking tickets, wristbanding customers, checking wristbands, managing queues, and welcoming excited people to the festival.
Accessible Viewing Platforms
You could be assisting customers by monitoring the capacity of viewing platforms, making sure the area is kept clear and tidy. We sometimes monitor the crowds from here, making sure everybody is safe and keeping an eye out for anyone in trouble.
We often have stewards patrolling in the campsites or in the arena, keeping an eye on crowds, campsite space, cleanliness and safety of areas.
At some festivals staff fire towers, keeping watch over the campsites for fires and other hazards.
Our operation is run entirely by volunteers on the ground at festivals, with more experienced volunteers supervising teams of stewards, or even running the shift from our control (The Oxbox). If you’re interested in supervising, make sure you tick the ‘supervisor’ box and let us know about your experience on the application.
At our events such as Trailwalker, stewards are integral to giving participants the extra boost they need to keep going and to cross the finish line.
