The rain may have poured down, but spirits were high when volunteers at Duffryn Community Allotment welcomed HRH Prince Charles on an official visit to Newport last Friday.
The Prince met adults and children who have worked hard all year to make a success of the allotment, which is a project run by Duffryn Community Link (DCL), Oxfam, Growing Spaces and the National Trust, with support from the Co-operative Society.
Many of the same people are part of Oxfam Cymru’s Livelihoods project on the Duffryn estate run in partnership with DCL with funding from the Big Lottery Fund Wales. The project works with local families and their children to promote positive parenting and self reliance.
Pupils from Duffryn Infants School presented the Prince with handmade Christmas cards. Tyrone Probert, 6, said: “I gave him the card and he said thank you. There was one for the Prince and one for the baby George.”
Jane Lewis, of Duffryn Community Link, said: “Everyone has been so excited. It’s lovely the kids have been able to be involved.”
