Applications: The Basics

Volunteering at Festivals

If you missed out on a Glastonbury ticket, stewarding is a great way to enjoy some of the best festivals in the U.K! But, how does it work?

During the festival week you will be asked to complete 3 x 8hr shifts. You will usually be asked to attend from the Wednesday to the Monday and shifts run day times, evening and nights. Our roles on site see you providing directions to the public, checking wristbands, monitoring crowds, manning gates, entrances and exits, and directing traffic. In between shifts the rest of the time is yours to enjoy and meet up with your friends. Volunteering with Oxfam is also a great way to meet new people, many people travel solo, and of all ages, so there is a friendly community on hand to explore everything the festival has to offer.

Sign up for email updates to be the first in the know when places are released here

To get prepared for your application you will need:

  • Access to the internet to apply online
  • A unique email address
  • A digital photo (passport style)
  • To provide a referee email address
  • Complete some basic information about yourself
  • Your bank details to provide a one-off refundable deposit equal to the price of the festival ticket

You will also be provided with training before you arrive on-site. We ask for you to select a day for training within your application, this is a few hours, face to face session, and there are also some spaces available to train online. The training must be completed before you can join us at any festival and we ask for this to be topped up every 4 years. There are also lots of very experienced volunteers who can show you the ropes.

There are loads of benefits to volunteering with Oxfam. You have your own campsite with other like minded crew and volunteers, hot tea and coffee, phone charging, showers and meal vouchers for each shift.  A marquee in the campsite often acts as a meeting point and a great way to meet new friends. A one off deposit gives you access to over 20 festivals. Each festival you complete helps us in our fight against global poverty.

  1. I’d love to support and work as part of a team at Glastonbury xx I Have worked at west Berkshire mencap for 15 years.. with adults with learning disabilities. I am dbs and first aid trained.

  2. Being a seasoned festival goer, it will be really good to give something back to the festival for a change, and help out whilst meeting likeminded festival folk and having an all round amazing time! Fingers crossed I will see you in the fields xx

  3. Having Worked with 16+Ypung People and have attended a few Festivals what a privilege it would be to be part of the Oxfam Team and give back help Support to like minded folks working with a well loved Charity 🌹

    1. Hi Ellie, thanks for checking in. To gain priority you would have needed to have completed 3 festivals in 2017 or two in 2017 and one in 2018. We hope to see you join us next summer. -Oxfam Festivals team

    1. Hi Beth, thanks for your question. Like applying for a job, we would consider a college lecturer, employer, or someone who knows you in a formal capacity to be appropriate, please do not enter the name of a relative or someone who has known you for a short time. Your referee will be emailed and they will need to confirm these following statements:

I have known this person for over six months.
I am not related to this person.
I know them through a professional capacity.
I can confirm they will be over 18 at the start of the festival.
I know them to be honest and responsible.
I know them to be punctual and reliable.

We hope to see you next summer. – Oxfam Festivals team 🙂

  4. I am wanting to work with you guys for the first time and am super excited about giving back to the festival community. As I am planning to be traveling around to different festivals this summer I am wondering if you can apply to volunteer at more than one festival and apply as a pair/group?

    Thank you

    1. Good afternoon Rachel, its great to hear you are super excited to join us next summer. You can apply for as many festivals as you would like (as long as they do not clash) and you will only need to pay one deposit which would equate to the festival with the highest deposit. When you apply you can add up to 5 friends to be shift partners with you via the online application. We will always try our best to make sure you are always on shift at the same times as your shift partners, however, we can’t guarantee your duties will be based in the same location. We look forward to seeing you next summer! – Oxfam Festivals team
