In The Park 2021

We’re so excited in 2021 to have the opportunity to work with a new event. With no Glastonbury this year, we felt it was the perfect opportunity to try something new and still raise those vital funds for Oxfam (and we hope you do too!). As the events are different from our usual format, we wanted to share some more info so you can be fully prepared and make an informed decision.

What is In The Park?

Here is an introduction to 8 brand new events we’ll be at during the 2021 season! Each event will count as one festival towards priority status.

Each event is two days. One of the days will have a lineup of comedy, known as Comedy In The Park, the other day will have music, known as Artist In The Park where the word ‘Artist’ will be replaced with the headliner for each event.

The public can only buy tickets for the individual days and so will only refer to Comedy In The Park, or Artist In The Park. Here at Oxfam, as we will be working both days, we are calling them In The Park.

Each weekend has different performers, so please keep an eye out on their individual websites for the most up to date lineup information. The musical headliners are either UB40 featuring Ali Campbell & Astro, McFly or Craig David. The comedy headliner for each event is John Bishop, with a variety of 6 or 7 other comedians on the day.

Each event is entirely seated so all ticket sales are in advance. No tickets will be sold on the gates.

There is one stage and there will be food traders, bars and toilets around the edges of the arena.

These are non-camping events, so you will need to make your own way to site each day. The gates open to the public at 4pm and the show will finish around 11pm, when the public will make their way home again and the site should be clear by midnight.

You will be required to work before the gates open to be ready to welcome people on-site, so it is estimated you will be required to be on-site before midday for registration, but this will be confirmed nearer the time.

The first shift will run until late afternoon,  allowing volunteers to enjoy the entertainment in the evening when their shift finishes. The second shift will be working from then until the public have left, around midnight, then you will make your way off-site. Final timings are still to be confirmed.

If you are working on the first shift one day, you will work the second shift the other day.

We are currently assessing the possibility of allowing you to indicate which evening you would prefer to work, and which evening you have free to allow you to fully enjoy either the comedy or the music.

What will we be doing?

During the events we are there to steward the entrances, checking tickets, giving wristbands, telling people where to go to find their seats and welcoming people into the events.

We will have patrols around the arena to help direct people to their seats, and also help direct them to the nearest toilets, food stalls and bars, being generally helpful and friendly!

As with most events that we work at, we will have members of our team in Event Control too to make sure everything runs smoothly and we can communicate within the Oxfam team with no issues.

Wherever you might be positioned, you won’t be too far away from the action so you will still be able to hear the acts whilst on shift. When you are not working, you will have specially assigned seats very close to the sound desk (the classic Oxfamily meeting spot) so you don’t have to worry about finding the best place to see.

Where & Transport?

Each event is held in a large park close to a large town or city centre, all around England.

Most of the events will each have a car park with free parking for staff and volunteers. Exeter, Lincoln and Leeds have confirmed car parks and we are working closely with the In The Park team to secure safe and free parking near to the events. Some locations will be more tricky, such as Gloucester, however we endevour to find a solution in partnership with the bar agency and security agency, whether that be a shuttle bus or similar. We will keep you up to date as soon as we learn more.

We will indicate the nearest public transport links on each individual festival page. In almost all cases, each event is within walking distance of a local train or bus station.

Nearer the time, we will publicise our LiftShare page for those of you who want to organise sharing transport. It is always greener to share and offer a ride if you have space! We have used LiftShare for years and trust their methods. Please only share with other Oxfam volunteers to guarantee you arrive safely at the correct location.

  1. Will I be able to sleep in my vehicle in the staff car park over night
    As many of the hotels and accommodation is booked or very expensive

    1. Hi Paula, no we do not allow our volunteers to sleep in their vehicles in car parks. If you cannot find accommodation or travel to the site directly each day, then we do not recommend you volunteer at that particular event. Best wishes, Oxfam Festivals Team

  2. I have provisionally registered to volunteer for this event but hadn’t seen this blog prior to signing up. Allowing people to request a shift would be really helpful as now I have seen the time we need to be there on Friday I realise if I am rotaed to work early Friday I will have to pull out of the whole weekend entirely, because I cant get there until 1pm, which would be a shame.

    1. Hi Ian, we do not allow people to request a shift for a number of reasons. The arrival times for festivals are typically not decided until nearer the time, so as per our terms & conditions that you agree to when you sign up, you have declared that you are available for the whole of the dates listed.     1. Hi Hannah, we are working with our festival partner to secure a solution for parking at the In The Park shows. Right now we cannot confirm exactly what this might be, but rest assured that there will be free parking although this might not be site adjacent.
