Golden Poo awards. Behind the humour is a very serious purpose of course. Handwashing with soap is among the most effective and inexpensive ways to prevent diarrheal diseases and pneumonia, which are together responsible for the deaths of over 3.5m children before their 5th birthday, every year. Duncan thanks for sharing these very enjoyable humourous shorts that are aimed at addressing a serious problem. While hand washing is definitely an effective way to prevent disease, I can’t help but think about the disconnect between the message and the reality/ opportunity. How can we expect children in very impoverished places to wash their hands with soap and water if water itself is a scarce (and often unsafe) resource? Moreover, if at least 1 billion people lack access to sanitation, how effective can a hand washing campaign be?
