Responding to the Secretary of State for International Development’s announcement of a global register for suspected sex offenders, an Oxfam spokesperson said:

“We very much welcome the Secretary of State’s initiative which is an important step towards protecting the people we exist to serve from sexual predators. Sexual abuse is an affront to the values of equality, compassion and justice that we hold dear and we are committed to working with the Government, Charity Commission and others in our sector to prevent it.

“Since 2011, we have made significant improvements – and since February we have gone further and faster – but we know there is more to do. We are deeply sorry for our failure to prevent the abuse in Haiti and for the shortcomings in the way we dealt with it.”
