Reacting to the announcement of a halt in fighting in the port city of Hudaydah, Oxfam’s Yemen Country Director, Muhsin Siddiquey said:
“The announcement by the Saudi-led coalition of a halt to hostilities in Hudaydah is encouraging. It is vital that it is observed by all sides so that the people of the city get a much needed respite from the offensive.
“This halt in fighting needs to lead to improved humanitarian access to Hudaydah where thousands of people are still trapped in parts of the city with supplies of food and water running short. Millions more rely on the port city as the gateway for imports of basic foods and fuel, essential to their survival.
“This break in fighting should be the first step towards a nationwide ceasefire for Yemen. Sadly airstrikes and ground level fighting are continuing across the rest of the country. Only by ending the war can we end the suffering of millions of Yemeni people.”
