Mystery Donor’s Manuscripts Make Monumental Mark with Record-Breaking Charity Sale

Elizabeth Barrett poetry volumes

Oxfam’s Aberdeen Books and Music shop is celebrating a bumper book sale, with a rare read raking in a record £1,050.

The books, first edition copies of Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Poems, were handed into the shop by a generous mystery donor before Christmas and were sold at auction last month after being spotted as potentially valuable by an eagle-eyed volunteer.

The sale is believed to be the largest in the shop’s history.

Jude Daymond, who manages Oxfam’s Books and Music shop at 5 Back Wynd, thanked the donor for their generosity.

Jude said: “We’re absolutely over the moon with the sale of these poems: it is a testament to the enduring power of literature to inspire generosity and ignite change: turning powerful poetry into poverty-reducing action. Not only have we found these volumes a loving new home, but we have also raised a significant amount of money for Oxfam’s life changing work around the world.”

Staff at Oxfam’s Aberdeen’s bookstore are encouraging people to follow in the mystery donor’s footsteps and donate their pre-loved books.

Jude added: “Oxfam is the biggest chain of second-hand bookshops in Europe, so by donating to us people are giving their books the best chance of finding a new home as well as helping Oxfam in its vital work to build a future free from poverty.”
