Oxfam is supporting a major IF campaign seminar to highlight the parallels between the Highland Clearances in Scotland and land grabs taking place right now in developing countries.
The event will take place at Helmsdale in Sutherland on March 4.
2013 marks 200 years since the Sutherland Clearances, when large numbers of people were forced off the land they called home. But land grabs are part of the present for many people around the world. In fact, an area of land bigger than Loch Ness is snapped up by foreign investors in poor countries every five hours.
The IF Campaign seminar will discuss how Scotland can use our experience to influence the debate on land grabs by hosting a Global Land
Hearing in 2013.
Speakers include:
Humza Yousaf MSP, the Scottish Minister for International Development
Judith Robertson, Head of Oxfam Scotland
Jacquie Aitken, archive officer, Timespan
The event is being held in in partnership with Timespan – a heritage and arts hub in Helmsdale.
Venue: Timespan, Helmsdale, Sutherland.
Date: 4th March 2013. Time: 1-3.30pm
This event is free but registration is required. Please contact Sara Cowan – scowan@oxfam.org.uk
