Inspiring Oxfam Talk in Penarth

In just a week’s time (Monday 17th June), Oxfam will be hosting an inspirational talk in Penarth. Our guest speaker Lydia Slack will be talking about her first-hand experience of Oxfam’s development work that she saw during her recent visit to Uganda. As an Oxfam volunteer, Lydia was recently selected by Oxfam to go on an exposure tour in February to Uganda, with four other volunteers.

Lydia saw examples of Oxfam’s work in the Kitgum Region in Northern Uganda. One of the projects she visited was the Gender Action Learning System (GALS) project, which empowers women to be more independent and aims to help women’s voices become more respected in local businesses.

Lydia said “The women I met were so passionate and ambitious. I met Achan, who only a few years older than me was not only a single parent to two young children, but had set up her own pharmacy business with help from GALS. She said the GALS training meant that she can now pay for her children to go to school.”

We’ll also tell you how Oxfam is responding to the acute humanitarian crisis in Syria. Oxfam has currently helping thousands of people who have fled to neighbouring countries to avoid the conflict, delivering food relief, hygiene kits and other household items to help people in humanitarian need.

Oxfam supporters really enjoy the insight they get into Oxfam’s lifesaving work from inspirational talks like this. If you would like to hear all about what Oxfam does and how we do it, join us at The Kymin, Beach Road on Monday 17th June at 7pm. Friends and family are welcome!
