Refugees and asylum-seekers living in Wales will be better supported and at a significantly reduced risk of falling into destitution if the Welsh Government delivers on the policy recommendations it has today accepted from a National Assembly for Wales Committee report.
The Equalities, Local Government and Communities Committee had taken evidence from refugees and asylum-seekers directly, as well as organisations working with them, to deliver a comprehensive report into the support Welsh Government could provide. The Welsh Government has now accepted, either wholly or in principle, 18 of those 19 recommendations.
Kirsty Davies-Warner, Head of Oxfam Cymru said, “Those families who have sought refuge from war, persecution or famine and arrived in Wales can still find themselves in a vulnerable situation.
“It is pleasing to see that the Welsh Government has accepted the vast majority of this report, which, if implemented, will make a big difference to the lives of many people.
“While there are existing programmes and funding streams in place, new commitments will need to be resourced correctly if they are to make a difference. At Oxfam, we look forward to offering our support to the Welsh Government in making sure they get this right.”
