Vital that Welsh Government accept refugee inquiry recommendations

Oxfam Cymru believe it is vital that Welsh Government accept all the recommendations put forward by the National Assembly’s Equality, Local Government and Communities Committee (ELGC) inquiry into the experiences of the refugee and asylum-seeking communities in Wales.

Head of Oxfam Cymru, Kirsty Davies-Warner, said, “We are delighted that the Committee has undertaken such an in depth assessment of experiences of refugees and asylum-seekers living in Wales.  We especially welcome the thorough and broad evidence taken, including hearing directly from refugees and asylum-seekers themselves.

“Welsh Government has already made some positive changes as a result of the inquiry, but it is now vital that they deliver on full range of policies outlined in this important report, which could have a life changing impact.

“Whether it is housing, health, transport or education, there is much the Welsh Government can do to help.  The First Minister spoke of the importance fulfilling our obligations to refugees and asylum-seekers in his recent speech to conference, so I am sure he will want to do everything in his power to make Wales a true Nation of Sanctuary.”
