On Thursday 4th July at 7pm, Oxfam will be hosting an inspirational talk in Chepstow Methodist Church Hall. Everybody is welcome and we will have Oxfam volunteer Adele Carter as our guest speaker. Adele will be talking about her first-hand experience of Oxfam’s development work on renewable energy, advocacy and assistance for small businesses during her recent visit to Nicaragua.
As the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, Oxfam has many projects in Nicaragua. Adele saw examples of Oxfam’s work in the Bosawas region. This included an area where Oxfam was working with the locals in order to support them in starting up their own businesses, including dairy, chocolate and furniture businesses.
Adele said “it took us almost three days just to access one area where Oxfam works. It makes you realise just how inaccessible simple things are for the locals, and how isolated they are from help. The training and support that Oxfam gave meant that a group of women had started up their own chocolate cooperative, which in turn had given the next generation of women brilliant role models.”
We’ll also tell you how Oxfam is responding to the acute humanitarian crisis in Syria. Oxfam has currently helping thousands of people who have fled to neighbouring countries to avoid the conflict, delivering food relief, hygiene kits and other household items to help people in humanitarian need.
Oxfam supporters really enjoy the insight they get into Oxfam’s lifesaving work from inspirational talks like this. If you would like to hear all about what Oxfam does and how we do it, join us at Chepstow Methodist Church Hall, Albion Square, Chepstow NP16 5DA on Thursday 4th July at 7pm. Friends and family are welcome!
