Surge in number of people in Wales buying pre-loved gifts for children expected this Christmas

A significant number of people across Wales are expected to make the switch to second-hand gifting for children this Christmas, according to a new survey carried out for Oxfam.

A study of 2,000 adults across the UK who celebrate the festive season found a quarter (24%) will likely buy pre-loved gifts for children this year – with the most popular gifts being pre-loved books (34%), toys (30%) and board games (17%).

And with 50 per cent of adults expecting to spend between £10 and £60 per child, shopping second-hand could cut their costs dramatically, as well as helping the planet.

Oxfam is encouraging shoppers across Wales to embrace pre-loved presents for a more sustainable and cost-effective Christmas.

Sarah Rees, Head of Oxfam Cymru, said: “Buying second-hand is a brilliant way to make Christmas special, especially for children. From a treasured teddy to a captivating storybook, pre-loved gifts spark the same magic without needing to be brand new. Shopping pre-loved isn’t just kinder on the wallet; it’s also a thoughtful choice for the planet. And when you pick up gifts at Oxfam, you’re not only treating the kids to something unique, but you’re supporting a cause that reaches far beyond the festive season.”

The YouGov survey, carried out on behalf of Oxfam, found that helping the planet and saving money are key drivers for sustainable shoppers this year – with over of half of people in the UK set to buy pre-loved gifts saying the main reason is because it is better for the environment (57%) and cheaper than buying new (51%).

But shoppers also think pre-loved presents are more thoughtful – with one in four (27%) saying the main reason they would likely buy a second-hand gift at Christmas is because it will be “unique”.

This attitude is reflected in how people feel about gifting or receiving a second-hand present under the tree, with six in ten (60%) saying they would feel comfortable receiving a pre-loved present for Christmas, while almost four in ten (38%) said they feel comfortable gifting a second-hand present to someone else.

For adults, the most popular choice of pre-loved gift is also books with nearly half (49%) saying they would likely gift second-hand reads this Christmas, while a quarter (24%) said they would likely gift pre-loved clothes.

Sarah Rees added: “Christmas shopping can be a lot to handle, but second-hand stores offer a refreshing alternative. You’ll find a fantastic range of unique, meaningful gifts that cut down on waste and protect our planet’s resources.

“By choosing even a few pre-loved presents this season, you’re not only saving on your Christmas budget but also supporting the fight against poverty and inequality worldwide. A small swap makes a big impact.”
