This spring term, in the run up to the Welsh Assembly elections, young people in Wales have the opportunity to take part in our brand new photography competition launched today.
‘Creating a Fair Wales’ photo competition invites young people aged between 11 and 18 years to take a picture and write a caption of no more than 100 words to share their opinion about what they want for Wales; what a fair Wales looks like to them.
A fairer Wales will mean different things to different people so this competition offers young people the chance to learn and creatively explore the issues affecting life in Wales today.
The competition is split into three categories:
- Fair and decent work for people in Wales
- A fair climate deal for Wales and the world
- A welcoming Wales for people seeking sanctuary
This is an ideal opportunity to examine careers and the world of work, find out more about climate change or learn about refugees and asylum seekers and to think about how to capture an idea in one photograph.

And don’t worry if you have no photographic experience or if all you’ve taken is a selfie! Glenn Edwards, professional photographer and competition judge has come up with ten top tips to help young people get started.
So what do you need to do?
Teachers should fill in the entry form and return it with the top three photos for each category from each year group to educationcymru@oxfam.org.uk anytime between 25 April 2016 and 9 May 2016.
Judges
The photographs will be judged by a panel of three, including Wales’ brand new Future Generations Commissioner, Sophie Howe, Polly Seton from Wales’ Global Learning Programme and former UK Press Photographer of the Year, Glenn Edwards.
Competition prize
All entries will feature, along with the captions, in an online gallery shared by Oxfam. The school or college of the winners will also be offered a free workshop from Oxfam Cymru and the winners will be invited to an event this summer which will include a photo exhibition, workshops for young people and an opportunity to meet newly elected AMs so they can hear from young people directly.
So encourage young people to read, explore, discuss and start snapping.
