By the end of 2015 there were over 65 million displaced people across the globe, so it’s no wonder that issues relating to refugees, asylum seekers and migration regularly dominate news stories.
However, teachers often find these issues challenging to deal with in the classroom. What is the best way to discuss such sensitive topics with young people?
Global citizenship can equip teachers and their learners with the skills needed to get to grips with these issues. To develop as ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world is one of the core purposes of the new curriculum being developed for Wales, and global citizenship offers the opportunity to do this.
This Autumn Term Oxfam Cymru has teamed up with the Centre for Alternative Technology and the Welsh Centre for International Affairs to offer two opportunities to secondary schools and colleges in Wales.
Secondary school teachers and college tutors are invited to apply to attend a free, one-day workshop which will help teachers develop their understanding of refugee issues, learn global citizenship methodologies, discover new ideas for literacy and numeracy learning and increase confidence in discussing challenging topics in the classroom.
The workshops will be taking place on the following dates:
- 23 November in Cardiff
- 29 November in Swansea
- 1 December in Wrexham
Global citizenship project for young people
ChangeMakers is an active global citizenship project which will help young people learn about the refugee crisis and the movement of people, develop their critical thinking skills and gain experience as peer educators.
