Workshops to explore the refugee crisis

Oxfam Cymru will be holding two workshops at Ysgol Friars this March to help teachers challenge the issue of the refugee crisis in the classroom.

Following the success of similar workshops in South Wales last term, two workshops will we held to develop teachers skills in the understanding of issues relating to refugees, asylum seekers, migrants and the movement of people in general.

In a time where the refugee crisis and asylum seekers are a hot topic in the news, it is crucial that young learners learn to think critically and humanely about such global issues today, while also learning essential numeracy and literacy skills.

Vicky Leech, Oxfam Cymru’s Youth and Education Adviser said:

“This is a fantastic opportunity to develop new skills, and to learn how to include pressing issues in everyday lessons to pupils in an interactive way. We live in a very divided and unstable world, and the need for responsible and compassionate teachers to encourage learners to become global citizens is greater than ever. These workshops will help teachers and learners alike to become truly global citizens”.

Neil Worthington, a teacher in Ysgol Friars, who will be hosting the workshops said;

“I’m looking forward to take part in these workshops. I hope the experience will be thought provoking, and will give me a better idea of how to include difficult and complicated subjects into everyday lessons.”

The workshops will take place at Ysgol Friars on the 7th and 13th of March, between 3.30PM and 5PM.
